Horizontal directional drilling (HDD), also known as directional boring, is a steerable trenchless technique that uses a surface-launched drilling rig to construct underground conduits, cables, and pipes in a shallow arc along a predetermined bore path with little disruption to the surrounding region. When trenching or excavation is not an option, directional boring is employed.
