In the case of turning, differentials play an important role as it allows the outer wheels to rotate faster than inner wheels as an equal amount of torque is distributed on both wheels. As passenger and commercial vehicles need 2 differentials in the front end and back end of the vehicle, 4 wheel drive does not have 2 but 3 to 4 differentials installed in the intermediate shaft positions. Owing to the following factor, 4 WD have front and back wheels turn at the same speed as differential locks both wheels at the same time.
